I intend to use this for digitizing old home movies from VHS and have run a few tests with sample material. When capturing from RCA there doesn't seem to be any way to capture in 1080 resolution, it seems to force you to only capture in 720. While the 720 quality is adequate, it has much to desire, the colors seem a bit lighter and washed out and there seems to be the odd codec artifact every once in a while in the resulting video. The quality of the output HDMI when the input is RCA seems to be much better quality and better color. With the RCA input, the HDMI output stretches the image wider (16:9) than the source (4:3) but the resulting video is in the correct aspect ratio.I've tested the following for the HDMI input:- PC HDMI (Works fine)- Nintendo Switch (Works fine)- PlayStation 4 (DOES NOT WORK, signal is blank and the blue HDMI LED on the capture device blinks and is unable to record) (See update below)I have tried the PC and Nintendo Switch on both 720 and 1080 settings and while the 720 has the minor quality issues mentioned above, I have no complaints about the quality of the 1080 videos. While viewing the output of the capture device when HDMI is the input, the video seems a little zoomed in and the quality is degraded, but these issues do not appear in the resulting captured videos. As others have mentioned, this unit has the 2GB file limit which on average got me 1 hour 5 mins on 720 and 27 mins on 1080. If you leave the unit recording it will just create new files every time it reaches the limit. I have not determined how much video goes missing in between new files, but it seems less than 1/4 of a second. The unit came with a disk for software (presumably for stitching videos together) but I have not installed it yet.A few people have mentioned about the audio lagging over time, I have not noticed any of this. I have recorded over 8 hours straight of 720 RCA input and over 10 hours straight of 1080 HDMI input and the audio is lined up perfectly at the end of each video segment and the end of each entire recording. As I want the best quality for my home movies, I don't think the 720 mode is sufficient for me even if the source is smaller (VGA / 480p). It is disheartening to see the HDMI output preview at a slightly better quality than the outputted video when all that needs to be done is just switch it to record in 1080, but it can't.If anyone knows how to change it to record 1080 for RCA then this review goes from 3 stars to 5.------------- UPDATE:As suggested by another person, one way to record VHS in 1080p is to use the YPbPr inputs, but this did not work for me, it still forced the video to be recorded in 720p.I managed to get the PS4 to record, I managed to do this by disabling "HDCP" in the Playstation's settings. The quality is good and I have no issues with it.I decided to return this as it is not ideal for my needs. I need a capture device to record from VHS in the highest quality possible, and there is no way for this unit to record from YPbPr/Composite in 1080p or allow for a higher quality 720p recording.I decided to change this to 4 stars, mainly because I purchased this before reviewing it thoroughly. This unit may be ideal for someone else's needs, but not mine. I decided to pursue the MYPIN 1080P HD Schedule Recording Video Capture VG0072 (B077P52RV8) instead, but haven't tried it yet.I needed this to record some programs off of my DVR. I wasn't able to use the HDMI due to copy protection on the DVR, but I knew this before I bought it. I used the component outputs on my DVR instead and it worked ok. There were some artifacts in the recording (the picture had a slight waviness or jitteriness to it). It was almost unnoticeable, but it is there. I can only assume that is due to design deficiencies. I don't think it is worth the high price however. It feels really really cheap. If I had to buy it again, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for it.Attempting to convert VHS tapes to MP4. At first I thought the tapes might be decayed or that the VCR was bad or that I needed to adjust the tape tracking settings. However, the tapes play fine on the VCR when the output is only to a screen. As soon as I connect to this device (using RCA: Red/White audio & Yellow video) I get either wavy lines or sections of horizontal lines. The audio seems fine.Summary: - Have tried with three VCRs (all using RCA cables) - I have swapped out multiple sets of RCA cables - Have tried with multiple VHS that were recorded in different ways - Have tried isolating electrical inputs - I have tried running the RCA through an HDMI converter and using the HDMI input. All to no avail. I have not yet tried using component video (YpbPr) but intend to try this as soon as I can get a set of cables. As part of my trouble shooting, I also directly connected a basic Roku via RCA cables and it recorded fine with no noise. Also ran the Roku as an input through the three VCRs (essentially pass thru) and still no noise or lines in the video. But the noise and lines happen with all VHS tapes--prerecorded/purchased ones, ones recorded from TV, and older one recorded from the original, bulky VHS camcorders.I bought this primarily to convert a slew of VHS to MP4--and the advert for it showed it working with an RCA cable. Since it does not seem up to that task, I intend to return it, unless the manufacturer or other users have a solution I haven't yet tried/found. I have about 3 weeks left to return it. Seems to work fine with other inputs, if 30 fps works for your purposes. Some of the other reviews suggest that it might be the frame rates--that this device will tend to have corrupted video due to VHS interlacing (?) and the 30 fps recording (?). So, I am exploring one or two devices from MYPIN that seem able to record even VHS at a higher frame rate and even allow the user to make picture corrections prior to starting the recording. These appear to be in the same price range here on Amazon. In my troubleshooting, I also used an RCA splitter configured with the VCR as the main output and split to a screen and the device. I wanted to see how the picture would behave even without actively recording. I discovered that as soon as the device was connected the interference occurred. This suggested possibly an electrical issue. I tried isolating the RCA cables. I tried using alternate electrical connections. I tried setting up in a different room (different breaker). Each time, the same lines with VHS, but not with DVD (via RCA) or Roku (directly via RCA or via RCA thru the VCR inputs). When running a VHS tape, as soon as I unplug the power to this box (it has no on/off switch), the lines and interference go away. As soon as I power it back on, they reappear. As I plugged and unplugged the RCA cables to the box, I also noticed that the image on screen got darker and less sharp when the box was connected.I welcome any comments regarding anyone's experience with this device or the MYPIN ones ("MYPIN 1080P HD Schedule Recording Video Capture,Live Streaming Video Game Capture Compatible with Nintendo Switch PS4 and PS3, Xbox one,N64, Blu-Ray via HDMI, Ypbpr, Composite Input with Remote " or "1080P Game Video Capture Card with HDMI and YpbPr Input, Mic-in Video Recorder Compatible with Xbox 360/One/ PS3 /PS4 etc"). Obviously, I will check also check the MYPIN reviews and comments. This capture box does really we with HDMI, but the component signal, although it works, is very static-y and that is why I didn't give it five stars. HDMI output and recording is crisp and clean however. If the component video was clear and crisp, this would be an otherwise excellent product.
